Artek pavilion ‘The Space of Silence’ by Shigeru Ban Architects

This is the Artek Pavilion, The ‘Space of Silence’, which was designed by Shigeru Ban Architects and primarily built out of one material; an environmentally- friendly paper plastic composite.

Artek, the world renowned Finnish furniture company, invited Shigeru Ban Architects to design their pavilion for ‘Salone Internazionale Mobile’. The challenge in creating this pavilion, was to use the new material ‘UPM Profi’, which is made out of scrap paper (wood) and plastic. Normally UPM Profi is used in decking, but this installation proves that it’s durable and flexible enough to be used.

The Artek Pavilion has been exhibited in Milan, Helsinki and Miami and demonstrates the ingenuity of design in offering alternative environmentally friendly spaces in the 20th century.
